I knew I wanted our little Mila’s first birthday to be a magical day, but preparing a party for 50 guests with the littles running around while getting the house ready for hosting – I was feeling the pressure. I might have put an unrealistic goal on myself (lol) but I was ready to make this party happen. It was afterall, my little girl’s first birthday. While most people say that the first birthday is for the parents (it’s not like they can tell us what they want or what theme to use) I still wanted to plan a party I was proud of while making it special for her. For her to feel like I made it just as special as her sister’s first birthday – when I was a mom of one and had a lot more time on my hands. For Madison’s 1st Birthday I did a pink and gold – princess – tea party theme. (lol) I wanted to really go for it, it was my first babies first birthday, afterall!
So when planning this one I wanted it to feel just as magical while spending half the time planning it. And in many ways it was a lot more simple. The unicorn birthday party is so very popular these days and not at all uncommon, but I wanted to keep it clean, fresh, light and airy.
I decided to go all white and went with gold Unicorns for added sparkle. To get a natural, garden party feel I bought artificial white roses and cut the leaves off them and used them to scatter along the table, decorate around the plates, and I made a garland out of them, the white roses and sparkly gold unicorns.
A sweet table really does become the center or cornerstone of the party, so this time around I focused on decorating the desert table and surrounding area as appose to the whole house like I did for Madison, which is also amazing for clean up afterwards! Again, simplifying! I used babies breath for the sweet table and kept all dishes and vases white. Babies breath can be rather overlooked as it is primarily a filler flower, however, I find when used appropriately it can be a very delicate, sweet and understated floral decoration. And with me wanting to keep it clean and airy, it fit in perfectly for what I wanted. The dining table was different, I went with tall white and pink orchids.
Yay for cookies!
The unicorn cookies, cupcakes and cake pops truly added a little whimsy – and the kids went nuts for them! They were the sweetest – and prettiest touch!
I found myself just staring at this cake!
While scrolling through my instagram feed I came across a post from a shop I had wanted to purchase from for a while. She had the most amazing, beautiful and delicate handmade heirloom dolls, and when I saw her custom unicorn doll, I nearly fell off my seat. She was so lovely and I knew I needed her for my little darling. The best part about a find like this is the memory she will hold, yes she is a unicorn which fits in with our theme but being able to have a piece of your childhood from a time that was as special as your first birthday (while you can’t remember it) is something we will be able to cherish together for a long time to come.
The custom unicorn doll was handmade by the lovely and talented mama behind Fable kids handmade. Mila’s unicorn came with her own back story and name which just adds to the magic and character of these truly beautiful pieces.
